Unravelling the carbon pools and carbon stocks under different land uses of Conoor region in Western Ghats of India

Land uses are pivotal in global carbon cycles. The native forest lands possess a greater potential to sequester higher carbon, which can directly address soil quality and climate change problems. Unfortunately, the rapid conversion of forests other land use over past few decades has significantly declined concentration soils. Therefore, order estimate impact land-use (LUC) on status, this present study was attempted under major ecosystems (Forest (FOR), cropland (CRP), tea plantation (TEA)) Conoor. Results from findings revealed that total organic (TOC) pools were (p<0.05) FOR than CRP TEA. TOC (0-45 cm) recorded FOR, TEA 32.88, 11.87 18.84 g kg-1 it decreased along depth increment. Carbon stock (t ha-1) (0-45cm) 68.10, 26.04, 42.42. Microbial biomass (MBC) (283.08 mg kg-1) followed by (94.64 (76.22 kg-1). microbial nitrogen (MBN) followed; > CRP. These results clearly indicate LUC inflicted status its extent quantified using degradation index (LDI). LDI (-38.65) (-61.75) signals need for immediate implementation management strategies ecosystem keep soils Conoor alive prevent degradation.
